National artist to present local workshop for children and adults
Steve Wirtz discovered art at an early age and never recovered.
“I went to the local library and got a book on paper mache and it kind of became a focus of my art," Wirtz recalled. "Lo and behold, now I’m mainly known as a paper mache artist.”
Wirtz's work often features animals in humorous themes or situations. The self-taught artist has exhibited in art festivals and galleries around the country, and has collectors of his art from around the globe.
“I like silly compositions,” Wirtz said, describing his work. “I like to think of absurdities and play on that. I did a sculpture that was a wire monkey with paper mache barrels inside and I called it “Monkey Full of Barrels”.
Born and raised in the Fond du Lac, Wisconsin area, Steve now resides in Michigan’s upper peninsula. On Saturday, March 28, he’ll be in Wisconsin Rapids
“I’m looking forward to coming to Central Wisconsin Cultural Center. That’s going to be a lot of fun where people get a chance to make their own sculptures,” Wirtz said.
The Paper Mache Pet-Tacular workshop is Saturday March 28, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Central Wisconsin Cultural Center. It will be fun for all participants, ages six through adult, and helpers are welcome. Cost is $45 per person, including all materials and supplies. To register, call 715.421.4598. To register, go here. To see Wirtz's hilarious sculptures on exhibit now through March 19, stop at the Cultural Center, 320 W Grand Ave, Wisconsin Rapids.
Wirtz will provide the wire armature frame of the pet sculptures. Participants will put the newspaper and colored paper over the top to create a glorious colored animal.
Wirtz noted, “You’ll be creating a one-of-a-kind three-dimensional creation that people haven’t seen before.”
